What is collaborative modeling?

Collaborative modeling is “a visualization technique to analyze complex and conflict-laden decision-making processes with all relevant stakeholders and decision-makers to create a shared understanding.” It is not innate to software development and is sometimes referred to as participatory modeling.

When exploring business problems through collaborative modeling, it is important that the focus is on discovering the domain, not the specific collaborative modeling tool being used. In collaborative modeling, “domain” refers to the specific area of knowledge or expertise being explored or modeled. The domain represents the subject matter or part of the organization that we, together with the stakeholders, are trying to understand and represent through collaborative modeling. Using collaborative modeling to understand the domain is also called domain modeling. Read more in Chapter 2 of our book to understand more about collaborative modelling and the tools you can use.
